What Can ADHD Skills Training Help With?

ADHD can affect much more than attention. Children and teens with ADHD may know what they are supposed to do but struggle with consistently putting those skills into action. ADHD skills training provides structured, practical support to help turn strategies into everyday habits.

Training may focus on:

  • Emotional Regulation — managing frustration, big emotions, and meltdowns

  • Impulse Control — learning to pause and think before reacting

  • Organization — keeping track of belongings, assignments, schedules, and responsibilities

  • Time Management — planning ahead, prioritizing, estimating time, and following routines

  • Homework Routines — developing consistent strategies for starting, completing, and turning in work

  • Task Initiation & Completion — getting started and breaking overwhelming tasks into manageable steps

  • Note-Taking & Study Skills — learning practical strategies for school success

  • Social Skills — strengthening communication, problem-solving, and peer interactions

  • Thinking Before Reacting — slowing down, considering choices, and anticipating possible outcomes

  • Optional Homework Help — practicing ADHD strategies while completing actual schoolwork

How ADHD Skills Training Works

The process begins with an initial assessment with a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) to identify the child's needs, strengths, challenges, and goals and develop an individualized skills plan.

Children and teens then typically participate in weekly one-hour skills training sessions focused on practicing strategies they can use at home, at school, and in everyday life.

With school approval, skills sessions may also take place at school, allowing the child to practice organization, routines, time management, social skills, and other strategies in the environment where they are actually needed.

Skills Training vs. Therapy

ADHD skills training focuses on teaching, practicing, and strengthening practical skills. It is not psychotherapy.

If clinical concerns arise that require therapy, the skills provider will consult with the supervising LPC. Depending on the child's needs, therapy and skills training may occur at the same time, or skills training may be temporarily paused while therapeutic needs are addressed.
